Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō
Acrylic and Neon on Genuine Taut-Art Canvas
1000 x 390 x 40 mm
Ngā Kurakura Hinenuitepō draws on the shifting light of the Aurora Australis—capturing a rare moment where colour, darkness, and movement meet.
-
The work began during a cold night in May 2024, following a late journey across Aotearoa. Witnessing the aurora unfold—fleeting, luminous, and difficult to fully grasp—left a lasting impression that shaped the direction of the piece.
The presence of Hinenuitepō, atua associated with the transition between worlds, informs the tone of the work. Her connection to darkness, transformation, and the passage of time offers a deeper context for the shifting light of the sky.
Layers of neon introduce a second experience of the piece, becoming more visible in low light and altering the way the landscape is perceived. As the light changes, so too does the work—moving between states, much like the phenomenon that inspired it.
The piece reflects both the natural spectacle of the aurora and the enduring presence of cultural narratives within Te Ao Māori.
