Haast Series Kokako

Haast Series Kokako

Acrylic on 50cm Panel Board | High Gloss Finish

Inspired by my autumn 2024 journey through Haast Pass, this piece captures the quiet beauty and solitude of Te Waipounamu.

The South Island kōkako—known for its haunting call and elusive presence—sits at the heart of the work, reflecting the stillness and depth of Aotearoa’s remote landscapes.

  • With its soft blue-grey plumage and rich, melodic song, the South Island kōkako has long been associated with the forests of Aotearoa. Rare and seldom seen, its presence feels both grounding and otherworldly—an enduring symbol of harmony within the natural environment.

During my time in Haast Pass, I was drawn to the quiet rhythm of the landscape—snow-covered ranges, deep valleys, and the sense of isolation that comes with being immersed in it. These elements shaped the tone of the piece, allowing the kōkako to emerge as both subject and atmosphere.

Through the Haast Series, I explore the connection between birds, land, and people. Each work reflects that relationship—honouring the mana of our native species and the quiet resilience of Aotearoa’s wilderness.
