Haast Series Huia

Haast Series 2024

Acrylic on 50cm panel board | High gloss finish

Inspired by my autumn 2024 journey through Haast Pass, this series captures the quiet stillness and remote beauty of Te Waipounamu.

The Huia—once a symbol of nobility, leadership, and tapu in Aotearoa—appears throughout these works, reflecting a deep connection between native birdlife and the landscape.

  • The Huia, known for its striking black feathers and distinctive white-tipped tail, holds a powerful place in Māori tradition. Though now extinct, it remains a symbol of status, sacredness, and connection to our natural heritage.

During my time in Haast Pass, I was drawn to the stillness of the landscape—snow-capped mountains, quiet valleys, and the subtle rhythms of the environment. These moments shaped each piece in the series, influencing both composition and mood.

Through the Haast Series, I explore the relationship between birds, land, and people. Each painting is a reflection of that connection—honouring the mana of our native species and the quiet, enduring presence of Aotearoa’s wilderness.
