Matariki Aoraki

2024

Acrylic and neon on canvas | UV-lit Frame

Inspired by Aoraki and the Matariki season, this piece reflects a connection to place, memory, and the quiet significance of light within Te Waipounamu.

The piece shifts under UV light, revealing another layer of the landscape — view here.

  • Created as part of an ongoing exploration of South Island landscapes, this work centres on Aoraki beneath a luminous night sky—its presence both grounding and atmospheric.

The piece was awarded First Prize and the People’s Choice Award at a local A&P Show, recognising its composition and the way it uses UV light to transform the landscape. As the lighting shifts, the mountains and sky take on a different presence, revealing a more immersive, almost dreamlike quality.

Matariki is a time of reflection, remembrance, and renewal. This work draws on those ideas—holding space for memory while looking forward, and acknowledging the enduring relationship between people and the land.

Through colour, texture, and light, the piece becomes both a landscape and a moment—anchored in Aotearoa, but shaped by personal experience and meaning.
