Te Rā – Legacy of the Māori Sail

Te Rā, the only known surviving traditional Māori sail, stands as a powerful testament to the craftsmanship, ingenuity, and cultural heritage of the Māori people. Estimated to be over 200 years old, Te Rā has traversed time and oceans, now held within the British Museum

In 2023, she made a momentous return to her whenua — the land where she was woven by the skilled hands of Māori artisans. During a private viewing organised by a rōpū from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, the atmosphere was charged with reverence and awe. The wairua of Te Rā filled the space, stirring emotions and memories that reached deep into our collective being.

Her intricate raranga (weaving) tells countless stories through each flax strand and feather. Adorned with kererū and kākā feathers, and even the rare use of kuri (dog) fur, Te Rā embodies the resourcefulness, artistry, and deep connection to the natural world that define Māori creation. As kōrero flowed, discussions explored her journey to England, the ancestral knowledge within her form, and the many sails that once traversed the waters of Aotearoa.

This painting pays tribute to that rediscovery — depicting a tā moko artist guided by his loyal kuri beneath the luminous night sky. It symbolizes navigation, identity, and the endurance of Māori tradition — honoring the past while lighting the path ahead.
